Hi all

I've seen bleached 2nd and 3rd issue revenue stamps. What do other collectors think about these?

What do you think was the reason for trying this.

Do you include any of these in your collection.

Do you think these stamps just should be disposed off?

Thanks in Advance

Hi

Usually, discolored or chemically bleached revenue stamps are the result of someone attempting to remove the ink cancellation, so that the stamps could be used again.

This is assuming of course, that someone didn't just leave them by a window for a long time or something.

Tax evasion is not a new thing, the stamps were washed to attempt reuse.

Hi All

One poster wanted pictures.

Well when I come across one of these, off to the dust bin they go.

Just happened to find one this morning, and make me thing maybe this might be an interesting posting.

So here is the one that has not made it to the dust bin, but will make it there shorty.

This is an interesting example, where the cancel partly remained.

Looks like the patented inks and paper did their job correctly.

Depending on whether an alkaline or an acid was used, either the paper changed color or the black vignette disappeared.

It's a good representation for the "after" example, in a "before" and "after" washing attempt presentation.

Hi all

Wonder if anyone else might have other examples they could show scans of?

Does anyone have a special interest in this sort of thing?

On instrument usage would be great to see.

Or how about pairs or blocks.

Just thinking

These stamps are generally described as having a "lightened cancel" The stamps never talk so the whodunit and why is left for the fictionalists.

I think the stamp is still collectible...

Why was usually for the most obvious reason, to reuse the stamp in an era where even one cent was real money. Occasionally it was because dishonest dealers had gotten hold of some of the essays of the vignette when they were sold as scrap and were using them to make fake inverted centers.
