I found this somewhere quite a while ago....kiloware, flea market, not sure. It seems unusual as they could have used two full 1/2 cent stamps for the penny instead of four bisects. It is not a full postcard, just the top strip shown. Does this have any potential to research further ($$$) ??

Ajuchum, welcome to the forum. Yes, you are correct - this seems to be 100% philatelic. It would be less trouble to just put one or two stamps on it.

I realize this thread is about Canadian stamps, but some of the same principles may apply: as a collector of U.S. 19th century revenue bisects, in order for a bisect to be treated as nonphilatelic, the stamp(s) had to be bisected to create a specific rate, e.g., a 10-cent stamp bisected because the tax rate due was 5 cents. Multiple bisects of the same type on the same document when complete stamps would accomplish the same thing would not garner the same value.

Also, another possible reason for multiple bisects on the same cover/document, rather than just philatelic, could be an (illegal) attempt to re-use stamps. Cut off the portion with a cancel and reuse the uncanceled portions as bisects.

Doing this to reuse used stamps is possible but seems like a lot of work to save a penny, although in 1898 I guess a penny was substantial. It does now seem to me to be purposely made for philatelic appearances. Thanks very much.
