Here's an item I found in the bottom of a box from a collection I bought a while back. The stamp is off center, but what a check! It's also a very nice cancel. What I don't know is whether the date is of any significance.

Here's the check.

This is not a check. The check tax was 2 cents. This is a certificate of deposit, any amount over $100 was a 5 cent tax.

First issues were used from July 1, 1862 until mid 1871 more or less, so 1868 is later mid period. Pretty certificate, but the date is not particularly important.

However the date on the back where it was signed has some significance, it's leap day, Feb. 29.

Hi

Let me correct the incorrect date of issue, First Issue Revenue Stamps were used starting 1 October 1862, not 1 July 1862!

Hi again, actually the cancel date on the stamp in question is 21 Feb 1868, the instruments itself is dated 26 Feb 1868!

I thank everyone for their comments. I had not realized there was a difference between checks and certificates of deposit, nor had I caught the leap year date on the reverse side. I like this item even more now

I must have been thinking about the 1898's when I wrote that. :-)

Different dates for the stamp and the instrument are not all that unusual, although most of the time the instrument is before the stamp rather then after.
