Scott # 554 Damaged Plate?

Is the difference in Washington's hair in the stamps on the left the result of plate damage?

Washington looks like he has mange in the bottom left stamp.

You're right. I just double checked the perfs. It was in the wrong spot.

First... the block isn't 554... it's 634... plate 19951 is 634

Second, it almost looks like 634a left / 634 right

According to French there are several Scott 634 stamps with recut lines in the hair. Unfortunately, he does not give a position or plate number for these stamps.

To the best of my knowledge there are no combination Type I - Type II pairs on Scott 634A or Scott 634 plates. The combination Type I - Type II coil line pairs come from a joining of two different plates to make the coil roll.

French did list position and plate number for these stamps. See the following examples:

Page 165, right col. 20304 UR7 Recut hair under "TE" of STATES. There is an image of this one!
" " LR 85, 86, 96 through 100 slight recut of hair at back of head.
Page 166 left col. 20347 UR 20 recut in hair. There is an image of this one.
" " 21148 LL74 recut hair. This is an image of this one.
Page 167 right col. LL92 Recut hair under "ATE" of STATES. There is an image of this one.

There are numerous indications of Recuts in hair, in the section of unknown positions!

There are more, you get the idea. There are more listed, no sense to list them all there.

Cloudy's book is interesting, he discussed recuts many times, I miss my friend.
