I typically do not recommend new issues but the new Father Theodore Hesburgh stamp might be one to take a closer look at....

The typical 'pane of 20' will be available at Post Offices: Item 474700, Forever priced at 49 cents each.

But the more interesting stamp is Item 799400, a commemorative PSA coil (50 Stamps @ $24.50 roll). USPS does not issue as many commemorative coils as they do regular issue coils. But according to USPS, they will not be available at Post Offices. Additionally they say that these will be a lower than normal printing quantity (2 million).

According to the USPS
Quote:
Stamp Fulfillment Services will not make an automatic push distribution to Post Offices. These stamp coils will only be available through The Postal Store®website at usps.com/shop or by calling our toll-free number at 800–782-6724

They are taking pre-orders now at the Cave.

Wow, I think the only other commemorative they've done in the recent past as a coil was the state flags.

Thanks for the heads up on this one; I'd missing that it was being issued as a coil besides the sheet version.

Has anyone received any reason from the USPS why this stamp was issued in two versions? Sheet and coil. I'm not interested in somebody's supposition, but actual information from the USPS.

I just finished putting the coil stamp on a mailing to the members of the Chittenden County (VT) Stamp Club. What a chore if you want to position it vertically on the envelope.

If the coils were printed so that an organization could use a machine to affix them to the envelope, it would seem that a horizontal format would be appropriate. I wonder how many current users of coils have machines that affix the stamps in a Vertical format.

Postal Service spokesman Mark Saunders told Linn's Stamp News the coil version of the Father Ted Hesburgh stamp is being offered as a market test. ... "This subject lent itself well to this type of test," Saunders said, "as we know we have a lot of purchase interest from the academia and religious communities."

Linn's, August 11, 2017.
