Used on cover, not exposed to chemicals or the elements, appears to be a bright magenta or maroon.

Walkman82, it looks unusual to say the least. I wish you could take a scan of this together with a normal stamp. This particular stamp ( Scott 2523 ) is known on a different paper ( Lenz paper ) but not with this plate number. There are other color varieties but I think they tend to be brownish rather than purplish.

Peter, according to my Scott catalog Lenz paper (2523d) can occur with plates 2 or 6. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the color on 2523d is pretty much the same as on 2523. And 2523c (Toledo brown) exhibits even less red or purple than 2523 or 2523d.
Definitely an interesting stamp.

Yup, I was confusing it with the Toledo brown stamp that exists on plate 1 and 7. Indeed the Lenz paper is on plate 2 and 6. This last paper is also prephosphored. Still, it would be interesting to see a scan of the OP's stamp and a normal copy taken at the same time for comparison of the colors.

The owner is scanning it for me, I'll ask him to place a regular 2523 next to it for comparison.

I have mint un-numbered examples that are reddish like this - they came from a find in Maryland and the plate number from that find was #6 like yours. Since yours is on cover, where is it from?

I don't know where it came from, I'll ask the owner or post the full scan when I get it.
