Hi Guys,
I have been trying to get some more info on this cover as far as other covers out there but am getting a little stumped. I can find good info about the flight etc and the pilot but only one other cover seems to be out there that I can find which I know must be wrong. Any help would be much appreciated.
Cheers

Your glider cover is listed in the American Air Mail Catalog, Seventh Edition, Volume 3 as number GL300406. There were 12 and a half pounds of covers and cards carried which works out to somewhere around 500 of them so they are not terribly rare, though you do not find them on every street corner. Pilot Frank Hawks signed many of them and those are the more sought after ones. Another even more sought after variety are the ones that have a supplementary cachet that is a rectangular label made of pink paper with the wording "This letter given service by Eaglet Captain Frank Hawks, pilot on first flight of sailplane San Diego, Calif. to New York" There were also some very sought after covers that were added at seven of the twenty intermediary stop cities (the glider had to land frequently along the way - it was not a non-stop trip). The flight was a publicity stunt sponsored by Texaco Oil Company and they prepared many of the covers. The glider did not actually glide its way across the country, rather it was towed at the end of a long wire by an airplane. If you are interested in US glider mail the glider mail section of this catalog is 57 pages long and spans all glider mail starting in 1929 and going to 2002.

This Volume 3 of the 7th Edition of the American Air Mail Catalog was just issued a few weeks ago. The American Philatelic Society sells it to Members of the American Air Mail Society or Members of the American Philatelic Society for $80 or to
non-members of either society for $100. It includes many photos of covers as well as cachets along with background information, catalog numbers and current values. This hard cover volume has 560 pages and in addition to the glider section it includes sections listing US Contract Airmail Routes AM 1-28, US Pioneer Airmail Flights, Canal Zone Flights, Amelia Earhart Flights (ones she actually flew - not the many commemorative covers from whenever she went near a town that wanted to use her name on a cover), and US Government Airmail Flights.

Awesome cover! Can't wait to get a nice one myself. In my book, 500 is rare.
