Do you think that Scott has any realistic view about the stamps Chinese market?
When I am looking the evolution of the prices in the different Scott catalogues, I am stupefied concerning the latest version (2018) Scott has divided its old evaluations by 3 or 4 !! That means that their previous editions (2009,2013...) were not serious ones????
Michel, unlike Scott, has a stable price evaluation policy ( I am talking about China ONLY) and they don't make such surprises to their readers. How can we believe in Scott evaluations when a day they give 3000 USD for an item and the day after they corrected to 1000 USD, notwithstanding the fact that on the market, the price of these stamps increase every day! The problem is not a particular stamp but all stamps of the PRC.
Could you give me your opinion about that?
Thank you very much.

I think Scott considers the Chinese Stamps as pure speculation. They know the bubble will burst. In fact many countries are overpriced.Bubbles have burst in the last years.Auction houses are clinging on the last threads of their cord before the inevitable... |

Your thoughts about Scott's is all wrong . First their price gathering is 6 to 8 months old before you see their printed price . Second Scott is in touch with many dealers and auction houses for input . Third they and any other stamp catalog really study and update only a group of countries each year ,so pricing can be three to four years out on inactive countries . Fourth ----China stamp market is a real mix market and as far as I am concern there are big gaps. I purchased a huge collections {into the thousands of dollars} of the People's Republic of China Liberated Areas at Michael Rogers last auction in Florida {2014} .There was four or five people who flew in from China and they never looked at or bid on those collections but fought and ran up the price on PRC material.I couldn't fiqure that one out ,so a real mix area to fiqure it out . If I was looking to start a new area ,it would be China airmail covers it seems nobody is collecting or pushing those prices higher . |

@floortrader My thoughts were guided not by the competence of Scott, but by the HUGE (and it is a soft word) price modifications! Changing 90% of the catalogue prices by dividing them by 2 or 3, does not look for me very serious. The honest collector who has trusted the evaluation of Scott by buying stamps for 3000 USD (example),thinking that he has made a good deal, suddenly, with the new catalogue prices, he notes that his purchase is now evaluated at 1000 USD; which is a very bad deal! How can he trust in Scott prices in the future? And what about if, in the catalogue 2019, Scott again divides the evaluations by 2? The problem, in my opinion, is not about the modification of the prices but is about 2 facts: 1- The HUGE variation of the modifications on nearly all PRC stamps. We are talking about 200-300 % of variation on 80-90% of the stamps. 2- The fact that, in contrary, the market price level is increasing every day and does not show any slow-down

Mainly in American - here it's just China. I don't think anyone here outside the diplomatic corps referred to Chiang Kai-Shek's bolthole as the "Republic of China"! |

@GeoffHa But in the catalogues, the "Republic of China" is Taiwan ! And the new Scott 2018 has 80 pages for Taiwan and only 100 pages for China Mainland (PRC) There is not a big difference ! |

Regarding floortrader's note, large number of China covers in Rasdale's quarterly auction on August 19-20. But only three airmail covers that I can quickly see; two of them first flights. |
