Hello everyone,
Nice site you have here, I'm always learning from the posts, so thank you !
I have a Cyprus stamp here with an error,Can't see it listed in Gibbons catalogue, was wondering if it was listed anywhere else?
The "S" of the word Piastre is broken.... hope you can see it from the scan
Any help would be most appreciated

Hi Sleekit. And yes, we are all proud of our site and thank our forum daddy for it.
What you have is most likely not an error, but an oddity. Looke like the red plate had a slip of paper attached to it when this stamp was printed. An error it might be if more of these oddities turn up. Pretty stamp and worth keeping.

Well, it could very well be just that plate variety. Sleekit, maybe sent your scan to Cyprusstamps.com for confirmation?
You know, in my previous answer I gave you the most common cause for your bite out of the S, but there are other causes. I do not know how the red lettering was printed, but a piece could have come out of the letter S in that stamps' position. Let's hope so - the stamp seems to be orth quite a bit.

Listed as the 'defective s' variety in the Cyprus Stamp Catalogue 1878-1991 by Clifford E Povey.
It has been positioned as the sixth stamp in row 4 on the right hand pane and the third stamp in row 4 on the left hand pane. The stamps were printed in sheets of 120 (2 panes of 60)

Thank you Peter + Moose, Most grateful
Any other info would be more than welcomed !
Perf12 ...thanks for the info, but I've looked at Gibbons and it's not the large S variety
Moose... Is there a photo of the 'defective s' variety in the Cyprus Stamp Catalogue 1878-1991 by Clifford E Povey
I don't know where to start with that !
Is it the same variety ?
Again .... Thank you all

Sleekit, unfortunately the catalogue does not show a photograph of the stamp in question or the other variety 'inverted S' (fourth stamp on top row on both panes) attributed to the same value which I can only presume to be the 'Large S variety'
Povey's catalogue is quiet an amazing piece of work and lists all known varieties and plate flaws of Cypriot stamps up to 1991 and readily available in Cyprus.
If you have particular interest in Cyprus you should consider contacting the Cyprus Study Circle in the UK http://www.cyprusstudycircle.org/
They issue a quarterly magazine and have CDs available of past papers, research etc while getting your hands on a copy of W.T.F. Castle's Cyprus 1353-1986 is not a bad idea either
