Hello stamp community members,

I would appreciate any help in identifying the censorship label below. Unfortunately its only on part cover the label is yellow paper with black printing.

The last line of text reads 'Briefzensur'. Also any pointers as to which reference books deal with censorship in Austria during WW1.

Many thanks

In German, the word 'Briefzensur' translates to Censoring.
It's a start:).

Maehrische-Ostrau Was in a contentious area of Habsburg Austria. At the end of WWI, I believe both the Poles and Czechs made claims on, and it eventually became part of Czechoslavakia.

This (1916) was a time when Slavic peoples in Poland, Czech lands, Slovakia, and others were clamoring for their own nations. So, in addition to the allies, the Austrians would also be concerned about the Slavic majorities in much of their territory.

Thanks you stamp community members for your replies, they have been very helpful

Checking the fragment again, the postmark is indeed dated 1916 from Marienbad 1. Does anyone know if these censorship labels were printed on different coloured papers?

Volume 1 of the old "Die Postzensur" by Karl Kurt Wolter has about 15 pages on censorship by Austria in WW1. Including a picture of a label very much like yours. Published in 1965, so there may be something more recent. Also all in German, so difficult to read for many of us.
