Here's a scan of Scott #51 and #53. To my ignorant eye the Arabic overprint on Richardsea's stamp looks quite different and not at all like anything in Scott.

Also, on my #53 (2p on 2Fr) the Arabic seems inverted. Scott doesn't list any such variant. Can anyone confirm or confute?

Eric

Mine also look like floortraders. They are three different words, "centimes", "franc", and "francs". I would have expected the last two to look more similar, but will wait for someone with knowledge of Arabic to weigh in. For the record Arabic is written right to left

The Arabic spells out "centime" and "peseta", respectively.

The inscription on the 2F stamp is "basaaseet", which appears to be the plural of peseta, transliterated in Arabic as beseyta.

Yes, it's easy to get the two series mixed up, but the initial series of Scott #26-37 is lacking the "Protectorat Francais" overprint found on Scott #38-54. Also the 2nd series has 5 values the first series doesn't. One of my favourite series - really like the combination of the scripts/values overprinted on the French design.

Thanks to all of you. I've learned a great deal here. Not least, the fact that Scott could do much better describing Arabic overprints. As it it, the catalog's image around #26-54 is quite inadequate, if not misleading.

Thank you for this post, I have just found one of these stamps in a big mix, and was puzzled by the Arabic too, they are really beautiful stamps, and I'm glad I know more about them now.
