Hi, I've looked long and hard but have never found a 499 in the same color as 500.

OK, asking other members, do you have an example and can you scan it so we all could see it. Of course a pair or larger would be great.

Same color is patently possible because 499&500 can occur on the same sheet/pane.

#500 is somewhat inaccurate--although it is usually the well known "deep rose", it has been shown to exist in a few other shades as well. You know, since the Wash Franks aren't confusing enough. :-)

Couple of comparisons. 499/500, colors are pretty close.
The 500s are on covers, the 499s are not.

Hi all, one finger typing leads to mistakes, and I made a mistake with the original posting.

Lets try again, looking for a pair or larger 500 and 499, which of course would be the same color. Maybe a nice block of 4 with 500's and a 499.

Sorry for my original one finger typing, guess I need to learn two finger typing or maybe hire a secretary.

The two 499 subjects, positions 95 and 96 in the lower left pane of plate 10208 are found in the bottom plate block. The Durland Standard Plate Number Catalog, published by the United States Stamp Society, answers this and many other questions. Membership in the USSS is recommended for anyone wishing to study or understand the Washington-Franklin series.

Hi cfrphoto, the United States Stamp Society is a good organization, and a great resource for Washington/Franklin Head Stamps, and other issues and series.

I've always enjoyed the Society publications, and highly recommend other collectors to always read everything they can get a hold of.
