I would start with the Linn's World Stamp Almanac.

It lists things like all the different stamp issuing entities, world postal administrations, philatelic terms, hobby basics, a great overview of U.S. stamps, and many other lists.

I purchased mine in 1989, when I first got back into the hobby. I still have it and I still use it.

You can purchase it on-line from www.amosadvantage.com

There are obviously hundreds of good books, both general and specific in nature. I'm not sure one will tell you everything you want to know. I probably have a dozen or more for my U.S. and German collections alone - plus several general information books.

I think you can find most of the information you need online. Just a couple of places to look:

http://www.glassinesurfer.com/
http://www.linns.com/

Linn's has a pretty good list of philatelic terms.

For books, Amos Advantage, Amazon and other sources are good. One place with more of a selection of philatelic items is:

Enjoy!

Here is a newish book that might fit the bill for you. It's over 700 pages and gets good reviews. I might buy it myself!

That's odd... they just released a new version of the Stamp Alamanac a few years ago.

I started with U.S. stamps and the book I find useful is the Guide To U.S. Stamps from the U.S. Postal Service.
It gives the Scott#, issue date,a picture of the stamp, and values. It also has information about collecting. I find its easy to use and not too confusing.
