How can I discover if this is this a genuine stamp?

Normally, one checks for Watermark first.
This one unwatermarked, so check for confirmation of Engraving
(They say smooth some kitchen tin foil over the face to see an impression)

Locate the Catalogue number, then search ebay for similar stamps
to see if your example remotely matches.

Hi Peter,
these are postage stamps, as the Penny Black, cut from sheets. 1853-1854

The plates for these issues were engraved by C.W.Coard and the stamps were recess printed by H & C. Best at the office of the Courier Newspaper in Hobart.

The stamp above has the printer's mark.

Badmouthboy, your stamp looks genuine to me. However, being cut-to-shape, the value is greatly diminished, compared to the outstanding margin copy Rod shows.

This Van Diemen's / Tasmania stamp is a classic, and one of my favourites of all time.

Here is mine, also cut to shape, and a small tear at the left. Which make it affordable

Thanks for the information, I did use the foil suggestion and a very faint impression appeared. I will retain for my collection, it is at least an interesting conversation piece.

Caveat: These stamps are completely out of my league.

1. Lovely stamp image Brian. I still do not have this stamp in my collection.

2. I thought Budmouth's stamp looked dodgy, I could not see a similarity with the words "PENCE" it looked rough.

3. Now with your image, the half circles at the bottom, intersect with your stamp, with the ebay image and budmouth's, the do not appear so.

I am discombobulated.
