Good Morning,

I made a mistake and didn't realize there was a forum in SCF dedicated to Australia. I posted this previously in the wrong area and I would like to re-post with much better scans and illustrations.

I have a Tasmania 1905 1d with the Watermark Inverted. I would like to know the catalog number of an inverted stamp like this and value if you could please. I'm not sure if this is common or not.

Hi souldjer777

Inverted watermarks were common during the period 1899-1912 and was one of a few watermarks used on the Pictorials.

The above stamp has an inverted watermark and in much better condition, it was sold recently for just under $10

Rob

Just to add another picture to this thread, I also just noticed an inverted watermark on Scott 103. Here is my copy, and backlit scan.

Hi Partime,

What all are you using or doing to get such a nice "backlit scan"?

Your method really shows the watermark well!

Thanks!

This older thread has a picture of the AverVision system that I purchased off ebay

The backlighting capability is not adequately shown, but trust me that the higher wattage light at the bottom project quite nicely through the stamp to the digital camera pickup.

The Lithographed printings.
Control of all the Australian states post offices and postal services was taken over by the Commonwealth of Australia in March 1991. An early decision was made to print all postage stamps at the Government Printing Office in Melbourne. The plates were sent out from De La Rue but there was no suitable printing press available that could use them. This resulted in the production of the two Lithographed plates for the 1d. They all have the V over Crown Victorian watermark and perforation 12˝. This print was first issued in January 1902 and was used until replaced by the Electrotypes in October 1902.

Rod. This is actually the Crown over A variety (inverted). It certainly looks like a V in its orientation, though.

The Australian Commonwealth Specialists' Catalogue (ACSC) 'Kangaroos and the Early Federal Period', Fourth Edition, Brusden-White 2004, states the following regarding inverted Crown over double-lined A watermarks on the 1d Tasmania pictorial stamps:

"The use of two plates on full sheets of 480 watermarks with a print and turn technique resulted in equal proportions of watermarks upright and inverted."
