Can one of our UK members put a matter to rest for me? I was at a show today and a dealer was insisting that the Gibbons shop on the Strand closed- 'years ago'. He insists there is nothing there now. I think he is bonkers.

Their Magazine for July has a coupon for use in their store. I did read they had cut back on retail stamp sales but still had the street level store with publications and albums.

Who's right?

Stanley Gibbons is up for sale. Certainly did not close down years ago.

Don't know if they still have market day on the strand in London. When I was stationed in England bought a great deal on U.S. stamps in a nice sized box, during market day on the strand.

I suspect that the market being referred to by STAMPMASTER is the "Underneath the Arches" fair that is held each Saturday morning in the road off the Strand that leads down to "Embankment" underground station. The SG shop is still very much in existence and the proposed sale of the company (again!) should have no impact on that. GLENN

My son spent most of May this year in London while attending a college course on Urban Geography. I kidded him before he left, suggesting he could stop by SG and bring me back some rarity. He did stop by - he's not a collector' and bought me the best magnifying glass I have ever had. I briefly forgot that when making my original post so they were open at least in May.

The dealer telling me this was someone I'd not done business with before and I think he was trying to impress me with how much he knew, etc.

I've had this happen before and could actually start a thread on moronic things dealers have said to me at shows, but doubt there's enough interest. Thanks to those who replied.

This dealer may not have been far off the mark.

Stanley Gibbons has occupied three premises on the Strand. I think they moved from nr. 391 to 399 Strand in or after 1981. The shop had been located on 391 Strand for almost 90 years.

I work as a tour guide and I pass the shop regularly. I went inside about three weeks ago to buy some stamp mounts.
