Would anyone have a Scott US Specialized Catalogue they might consider parting with? I need to find market values from that period for a LOT of stamps, and I thought this might be a good place to look.
The problem with Scott Catalog prices, is hidden in plain sight in the section Acknowledgments introduction section.
"Those who follow provided information that is in addition to the hundreds of dealer price lists and advertisements and scores of auction catalogues and realizations which were used in producing the catalog values provided herein"
So lets call it a top 100 influential philatelists if you will...[no kidding] that source and report on pricing.
What is always a pile of ridicule is when you read "Stamp Market Tips" in Linns from a dealer touting his own merch as a good buy in stamp markets at a discount off Scott [of which he was a pricing contributor].
So much of it, particularly in specialized catalog is fiction produced by the same group of cronies.
Thank you for your comments. I am aware that Scott Catalogue values may not equate to market, but at least they are a good starting point. I am trying to come up with a valuation of an old family collection at the time of inheritance, which becomes the basis for tax purposes for the heir. Hence the need for some sort of valuation basis as of 2002. I might be able to find an old catalogue in a library, but, if they would let me check it out at all, I doubt that I could keep it checked out for months.
