All, Need some opinions on whether this copy of RB15c has good or bogus roulettes? It is priced to sell in a sales circuit. I went to PF to look at the copies they have cert'd, and it looks closer to the good ones than the bogus copies. I have been ignoring the RBs in my collection but am getting to the point I need to start filling the holes. Thanks in advance for those who have more experience with these! StateRevs

Hi Stampmaster,
To clarify, my question is related solely to whether the roulettes are legit.
Thanks!

Wait for Bart (revcollector) to chime in. He's extremely knowledgeable when it comes to the proprietary roulettes.
I'm jaded enough that for the most part I will only buy the roulettes as multiples or with certs. |

Part of my plan I was mostly worried about the right edge. I tried to use a perf gage to see if I could line anything up but they don't line up perfectly as perf 12. Of course, my Specialized only lists "perf.", not which perf this series actually are supposed to be. I assume it is the same perf 12 as the previous series? |

I'm suspicious of this one. I don't see anywhere near enough of the correct characteristics to call this genuine from the scan. I particularly dislike the vertical margins on both sides. |

The stamps are perf 12, but the roulette's are perf 6, so a perf gauge is of little practical help with these. Fakes are created by trimming every other perf, which creates.....a perf 6. |

@REVCOLLECTOR, May I ask a question on the measurement for this issue roulettes? Are these gauged at 6 per 20MM or some other measurement?
Just asking, I only collect these in pairs or larger.

Hi Revcollector, Is it a ratio issue or overall dimensions? This copy doesn't seem to have smaller margins than several of the ones on the PF website. In fact, they appear larger than some of the copies. This is in an APS sales circuit. Price is $45 against a cat value of $400. I think I will buy it and submit it to APEX for expertizing. If it comes back bad, APS refunds the cost of the purchase and the expertizing costs. Seems like I win either way, although I certainly hope it is a good copy to fill that hole! |

Larger???? Lucky to find pairs for most of them. A couple of values have a few blocks, but roulette multiples generally run from very uncommon to pretty rare. All perforation measurements are done from 20mm, regardless of the type of perforations involved. |

The price alone should give pause; it is far to inexpensive for a genuine example. Since you are protected, buying it and sending it in is a good idea. I expect that it will come back as a fake. |

It's not the size of the margins, it is the shape and size of the roulette's and appearance of the margins themselves that disturb me. |

Quote: Larger???? Lucky to find pairs for most of them. Sorry - I mean the margins seem larger on this copy than ones certified as legit. Not referring to multiples. APEX cert is $25. If it is bogus I get my costs refunded. Seems like a no brainer on the off chance it does come back with a clean cert. This is why I posted here to begin with. I am very leery of these having read several posts regarding bogus lots on ebay! |

Unlike imperfs, the actual size of the margins is not the issue until a stamp has close to no margins. There have been some good posts on the board about roulettes, worth looking for. |

All,
Received an email from APS just now regarding the cert for this stamp.
"You previously sent an item to the APS Expertizing Service that you had purchased from an APS Sales Book #889204 the US Scott #RB15C. Please note the item has been returned from Expertizing as "US RB15b perforations trimmed 4 sides and perforation holes shows right and bottom, vertical crease".
As the item is not as described, we will be issuing you a refund for the full price paid".
So there you go! |
