Four U-shaped slits cut into the paper of recent self-adhesive Machins. Designed to tear the stamp if removed from the envelope paper--to prevent re-use. I don't have a picture to include.

Hope this helps.

Robert

Edit: Found a picture.

I should mention, besides the U-shaped slits, there are other security features: elliptical die cuts at the sides and the iridescent "Royal Mail" overprint (best seen on the red stamp above). Those features are designed to deter counterfeits.

Soaking a self-adhesive stamp doesn't seem to smart to me.

If they arrive uncancelled, I tease off the paper on the back and re-use with a bit of glue. I guess they get through to the destination because my solicitor still writes to me. Maybe the postage due charges will all go on the final bill?
