I am not the original author, Bob Allen wrote the original content. His website was closed and he was kind enough to give me the original files so it could be republished for the community. I make updates and enhancements.

I think the reason that this pair's identity is so confusing is that it should be, because it's a Type III coil (488) that has had the Type III ribbon shading lines scraped off. Also, the toga button and rope have been lightened. The result is that it presents elements of all three possible types. The giveaway that it's really Type III is that, from the first image, it's clear that the frame line of the stamps are checkerboarded, or crosshatched, whereas on type II the frame line consists of four parallel lines that are always fused into one solid line on the unwatermarked rotary coils.

@Tipzi

I am confused by your description? Could you grab my photo and put an arrow or a circle on the area you are talking about? I am not aware of that the feature you mentioned can be used as a definite feature to differentiate Type II and III.

Thanks

Note how the frameline is engraved. This is Type III.
