This one is a Spiro Brothers forgery of the "crown and posthorn" series 3c stamp of 1874. The genuine stamps are on watermarked paper, and the lettering is sharp and clear. Most notably, the Spiro forgeries lack a hyphen between "DANSK" and "VESTINDIE". From Varro Tyler's Focus on Forgeries, "Within two years of their appearance, the five original values of this definitive series first issued in 1874 were imitated by the Spiro Brothers in Hamburg, Germany. The original stamps were printed by typography (letterpress). The forgeries, which are still common, were reproduced by lithography."   |

Seller claiming it is a wrapper.When in fact it is with a forged stamp (Parma Governo Provvisoro 1859, 9 centesimi) and cancel.Bogus wrapper.There are many forgeries on the market.Genuine stamps used on covers or newspapers are scarce.  |

Since the "terrible forgery" stamp in question mysteriously got vanished, here it is.  https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/203352380099For the record, this stamp is absolutely genuine in all aspects–the base stamp, the overprint and the cancel. The stamp is Gwaliyar 1896 2A6P SG 23 with Gupta type 13 barred circular cobra cancel. The 2A6P denomination was exclusively used on registered letters with ˝A/6P being the basic letter postage for weight upto 5.83gm (˝ tola), the rate in effect from Jul 1,1885 to Mar 31,1905 and 2A was the registration fee per article from Jul 1,1885 to Apr 23,1922. As usual, perf12's posts on India should be taken with tons and tons of salt.  |
