Having a devil of a time trying to sort out the differences. Anyone have any hints that might help tell the differences? I see the war issues have a few more color varieties. Are dates dates in the Michel Spec. that follow the color description the first date for that color and run till the end of the distribution?

Sometimes it is very difficult or impossible to sort out war vs. peace issues, especially in the 1914-15 period. My strategy in doing this was to take all of my watermarked Germanias (1000's of them) and sort them by year cancel. By doing this, you can see how the paper and printing quality deteriorates...especially as you move into 1918 and 1919. A good magnifier helps greatly. I use a 1950's vintage Leitz binocular microscope.

For colors of the war printings, you really need to send them to the "Bundespruefer" to get an opinion. There is no other way.

Here is an example (description also in English there).

And here are some Michel color names with examples (yes I know it's not 100% perfect to device colors digitally, but it helps sometimes, of course only if you have a good monitor with a calibrated RGB profile):
