Can anyone help identify this stamp as either an Scott 83 or Scott 83a...I have tons of Netherlands stamps (and world stamps) but have no time to go through them all.

Hope some one can help..Thanks.

Robert

I am not used to work with Scott numbers.

But to my opinon this is the later version 1899-1905.

Collectors in the Netherlands even those with experience, find this one difficult to ID.

I do agree with Johan. The later one has the "1" away from the bottom and the letters are thicker.
( Edited to correct the spacing of the "1" )

wert I posted this not too long ago in another thread. I think it's easiest to look at the letters. You'll see a difference in the thickness. The thicker letters are type I.

Jenny, per the Dutch NVPH catalog: Type 1, the "Kroningszegel" - the letters of "gulden" are as thin as the letters of "Koninkrijk dr Nederlanden" and the "1" is closer to the bottom. The stamp on the left with the The Hague cancel is Type 1. The type 2 stamp has the letters in a thicker font like the other three values in the set ( 2,50, 5,00 and 10,00 guilders ).

To add my two cents worth, I always look at the space under the "1".

If it is equal in size to the border underneath, it is type II.
If it is half the size of the border underneath, it is type I.

In addition, the date of the cancel can be useful, as any examples dated before August 1899 must be type I.

j2186..Is it just me or does the cancel date look like 1898-June-2nd.

On your example?

It looks to me like 1920 something. That cancel didn't come into general use until 1915. (Specifically, Oldenzaal short bar hammer 2 was issued December 1915).
