Sure seems like a strange coincidence that a heavy black "cancel" is exactly where a blue "specimen" overprint would normally be.

Unless I'm seeing things.

What do you think?

Also, how can it be "used" if it has original gum on it?

Jim

p.s. This is the stamp that I am referring to:

It can't be a specimen and still have original gum, they were NGAI. So it had the specimen O/P scratched out, had the black line added, and then was regummed for some reason.

Ah yes, the ubiquitous used pen canceled 1¢ official. Occasionally there is a surprise under that ink. This "artist" covered up a nice variety that was probably worth more at the time than the used 1¢ Justice he was trying to create would have been.

So... probably not a $475 stamp then?

Actually they were not. Back in the day, no one cared about the specimen overprints. That's why the more common ones were played with so much.

I've also seen pen "cancels" at the top of dollar denomination state officials, only they're at the top, to cover the tiny black "facsimile" overprint.

They're all just coincidences, right?

Ha ha

That's very nice. Well centered officials are tough to find, let alone with a nice cancel.

I think I have a book that describes stuff like this as "album weeds."

Seems like an appropriate term.

"Album Weeds" is a classic series on forgeries and fakes.
