Detailed Books On Different Stamp Perforations.

Below is a Scott 1172d...Unitrade shows original perf for Scott 1172 as being 14.4 x 13.8...This stamp below is 13.1



Having said that..Below is my Scott 152 ( Newfoundland stamp ) that Unitrade shows 3 different perforations..14 x 14...13.5 x 14.....and 13 x 13.5

Now I use along with Unitrade a book called Newfoundland Specialized Stamp Catalogue which shows me more perforations...Se picture below.



HERE IS MY QUESTION
Are there any Catalogues out there that describe more perforations for Canadian stamps.

Darnell STAMPS OF CANADA CATALOGUE, page 208 has the following:
"(1990 January 12)
{Darnell Numbers)
1308 45c Prong Horn, perf. 14 1/2 X 14
1308a 45c Prong Horn, perf. 12 1/2 X 13, from booklet
1308b 45c Prong Horn, perf. 13"

As far as I know the Darnell catalogue is no longer published but he went into more detail on perforations and modern varieties. If you can find a copy you might find it interesting. ISBN 2-290-734-08-3

Wert: I am more into old line perforations than modern comb or harrow ones. However, most modern perforations are more consistent in that collectors are able to take the number of perforation holes including half holes divided by the total length of the stamp and then multiplied by 2 cm or 20 mm. Great question Wert, I would assume that most Canadian printings were done is Canada and we had a better system of quality control

Now your example NFLD scott 152, 9 cent Cabot tower. According to the NSSC catalog, only 50,000 copies were printed, I am assuming 100 stamps per sheet. So that makes 500 sheets were printed, but this stamp has 5 different perforation varieties identified.

Question now is.
1) were all 500 sheets printed at the sames time
2) was there 5 different perforators?
3) or were they perforated on a Monday morning? LOL
4) or were the printers under the influence of opium LOL

Trodent...and others I believe back then that accuracy was not a main concern..If perforation pins broke, then would just replace them temporary until the original was repaired or even just ignore the original and go with whatever they had on hand...

The point is that say if a stamp comes in 2 different colours, all stamp collectors would identify 2 stamps as different and collect both..Then why do we not pay attention to the many perfs..They to (in my eyes) are different stamps worth collecting..AM I CORRECT..??

That is the perf from the Booklet Pane single 1772f in Unitrade. It should be perf 12.5 x 13.1. The booklet pane has selvedge on all sides of a block of 5 stamps plus a extra placeholder stamp for the 6th in the block. There is a small picture in Unitrade. The selvedge on your stamp all but gives it away.

This issue is known for scarce perf varieties like 1178c ($50) or 1175a ($100). These are listed in Unitrade but maybe Darnell will provide better detail or more varieties.
