All,

Does anyone have any experience with the Palo US Revenue Hingeless Albums? (R- through RY-)

I am still using my old US National 1 binder Revenue pages, and it is wayyyyy past time to upgrade.

I love my Scott Platinum hingeless albums. Hated paying the $600 price in the mid-90s when I bought them, but there is no doubt they were a great investment. Not only has the value of the albums themselves pretty much doubled, but not having to mess with mounts is awesome!

So I saw an auction on SAN a while back where the dealer was breaking up a large revenue collection and everything was on the Palo hingeless pages. Other than the irritant of them not have Scott cat numbers, the pages looked nice. My biggest issue is the large format red and greens with serial numbers ($30 - $10,000) look like the mounts are too small, and every one of them stuck out above the top of the mounts.

Has anyone else had this experience or do they fit on your pages?

Looks like $941 for a complete set with pages, binders, slipcases and labels. Before I plop that geld down, I want to make sure they have the correct sized mounts!

Thanks in advance!

StateRevs,

I have mixed feelings about my Palo binders. I do not have hingeless pages. Assuming the binders are the same as for what is used for the hingeless pages, look for the rings not always aligning properly. Many times I have had to open up the rings to put the pages back where they belong. Each binder (I have nine of them) costs over $50- each. Unacceptable quality control. Also, the binders are 12" X 13" making it difficult to find a shelf where they will fit.

Finally, unlike my MYSTIC binders, the Palo slipcovers do not have indents to allow you to easily retrieve the binder from its slipcover. My two cents.

I have a set of Palo hingeless pages both for U.S. stock transfer revenues and also Mexico.

I posted about the latter, including images here:

The most important thing to note is that even though Scott numbers are not printed on the pages, Palo uses Scott numbering for all of their non-British Commonwealth pages. Everything will be in Scott order and all major numbers will be included.

If you're used to Scott ordering, the Palo pages are VERY easy to use.

Another thing: By default the hingeless pages are printed in color but you can request black & white at the same cost. It's a personal choice, but I MUCH prefer the black and white pages, because when the pages are printed in color it becomes very difficult to tell at a glance which spots are filled and which are not.

I find color album pages, while pretty, very difficult to use.

Oh, I forgot about that. I have the black and white pages as well. I much prefer it that way. Unhappily, as I collect King George VI Commonwealth, the pages do not contain Scott or Stanley Gibbons numbering. Just pictures. (Sigh)

Do the large $30 - $10,000 stock transfers fit in their mounts?

Have you had the same issue with the binders as Jack describes?

I agree with you both about color images on pages, and intended to go with B&W if I do decide on the Palo pages.

When I initially bought my Platinum albums, I had a dealer explain it was almost the same cost to buy Platinum albums vs. National plus mounts. As Dan has posted elsewhere, my time is easily worth the extra money and I have zero desire to mess with putting mounts on album pages.

By the by - I only wanted the first three Platinum albums. Turned out to be basically the same cost to buy the entire set with binders, slip covers, pages, and updates as it would have been to buy just the first three separately. At that point it seemed a no-brainer to simply get all of them, even though I don't really focus on post-30's US.

As long as the pages are decent, I promise you will love hingeless pages and will never want to go back. 22 years later, I have zero regrets about that large purchase! When I bought my Platinum set I sent a letter to Scott and asked them to quote a price for hingeless revenue pages. They simply replied they didn't offer that product.

Shame - I would have purchased it years ago, and I imagine many of the members of this forum would have as well!!

I don't have many of those, and I realize they can be sometimes have unusually large margins on one or more sides, but the ones I have fit just fine.

No, but I may have just gotten lucky qith the quality control on mine.
