The Hellenic Navy sloop-of-war Kartería (#922;#945;#961;#964;#949;#961;#943;#945;: "Perseverance"), built in 1825 in an English shipyard, and in active service from 1826 to 1831 (during the Greek War of Independence), was the first steam-powered warship to be used in combat operations in history. The 233-ton vessel was propelled by paddles powered by two small steam engines. Kartería also had four masts to cruise under sail, but then switch to steam-power for better maneuvering during combat. The sloop was armed with eight heavy-caliber 68-pounder guns. Here is an image of a stamp depicting Kartería under sail, printed by lithography, and issued by Greece in 1971, Scott No. 1015.

Norfolk Islands issued a set of 12 stamps in 1994 showing Early Pacific Explorers. They also issued a souvenir sheet SC 562 showing the Golden Hinde.

Golden Hinde was an English galleon best known for her circumnavigation of the globe between 1577 and 1580, captained by Sir Francis Drake. She was originally known as Pelican, but was renamed by Drake mid-voyage in 1578, as he prepared to enter the Strait of Magellan, calling her Golden Hind to compliment his patron, Sir Christopher Hatton, whose armorial crest was a golden 'hind' (a female deer). Hatton was one of the principal sponsors of Drake's world voyage.
