Hi,

I've just found a 37 with curious markings on the lower right margins and I'm wondering what that could be.

The stamp is in the "red-rose" shade of 1871-1872 (Hillson and Nixon classification) and I guess you could consider it either as a 37c or just a plain 37.

I've set a pretty solid date on this one as evidenced by the Hamilton duplex cancellation. Even though it's faint, I've matched it to hammer state no.3 that was in used from 1870 through 1872 (It's Lacelle #80, see also Canadian Philatelist, 1967, p.49)

If it is a misplaced entry that was not sufficiently burnished off, there should be many other examples of this one since that plate was set to print many other stamps after that date.

Any help IDing this one would be great!

Looks very much like bad plate wiping to me. The dot under the curl could be a lay-out marking; I believe I see what is left of a lay-out line just to the right of the numeral "3". Pretty stamp!
I also see a guide dot on the left bottom.

Peter, there were no intentional guide dots on the bottom right, as far as I know. I suspect that the dot is part of the other markings - whatever the cause, I have know idea.

Cjusz_911, the shade looks red rose to me.

Thanks for your answers!

I've had this stamp for a while now and I always thought it was a dirty plate like Peter suggested.

But as BeeSee pointed out, what looks like a position dot below the curl got me thinking that it was something else. Yet, shouldn't this feature be well known and identified with position if it is a misplaced entry?

I guess this is still open to debate! O the joys of the Small Queens!
