These are incredibly difficult to identify. I compare the retouch picture from examples in book and can't differentiate still. |

Hi maverickx
I have no idea what the "31" is? The Lyrebird definitives were from 1932-1956. The 1/- "green mist" retouch variety is dull green (ACSC 210), it is unwatermarked and was issued only in 1956.
The Lyrebird took over from the Map and Kangaroo definitives that were issued from 1913-1932, The 1946 2/- redrawn Map and Kangaroo was the only time an altered version of that stamp was issued.
The "green mist" variety is very sought after and very rare, in the ACSC the stamp is worth $5,000 MUH; $3,750 MLH and $3,000 Used. These prices are just a guide, I have seen such a stamp selling at $4,500 used and nearly $7,000 MUH.
Does yours have a watermark?

Quote: I have no idea what the "31" is? Opinion: An auditing device, to record canceling hammers throughout the state, Beyond that, the system appears hazy. I see numbers top of CDS Bottom, within 2 ring cancellers Some sort of Code top centre such as, "19 0" "TX" etc. "31" would possibly be a counter hammer at the Melbourne GPO. Here is one with "MG 2" (Melbourne GPO #2 perhaps) |

Thanks Rod, solved that little issue for me. maverickx will need to see if there is a watermark or not, but in my opinion it looks like the normal issue.
The 1932-1937 issues are green and yellowish green. The issues prior to 1937 were of a larger Lyrebird and from 1937-1956 a smaller Lyrebird replaced the previous Lyrebird.
The "green mist", currently do not have one, as there is no MUH available for me to obtain, but they are very rare and seldom seen at auction in any condition.

Turns into a very nice thread for me.
Remembered a lyre bird block and surprise I did find it "in that room" but it was a CofA.
Found an album though with some large mint blocks from 40's & 50's and a good amount of printer imprints & middle margins.
Nothing spectacular but I did not know I had them. With a quick look some seem to be in good shape as well. |
