Is there an easy way to convert Minkus to Scott or Vis Versa, or is there no way currently.

Catalog publishers are protective about any publically published 'cross reference'. Mentioning this term is one of the fastest ways to get a 'cease and desist' letter from one of their attorneys. Some dealers are 'allowed' to publish ads which have multiple catalog numbers listed and then you can hobble together your own spreadsheet. At other times some collectors will share work they have done. You best chance is to ask about a specific country and see if someone might share their work. Don

Keep a lookout on ebay for someone selling one of the old Minkus commercial price list booklets (not the catalog) that were given away at the Minkus sales counter in places like Gimbel's in the period before the mid 70's. They list US, Canada and other popular collecting areas with both Scott and Minkus #s. |

Hasn't it been at least 50 years since Minkus catalogs were commonly used?
If that is the case, then there might also be issues with finding the correct Scott #s for the old Minkus #s. |

Quote: If that is the case, then there might also be issues with finding the correct Scott #s for the old Minkus #s. Scott does have a habit of changing a few catalog numbers each year. After that many years, there could be a lot changes. |

Minkus use to print one when automatically when they issued new Catlogues and Gimbels Stamp Dept, 7th Avenue, New York City in New York. had them available when you made a purchase or simply asked a clerk., at their main outlet in Gimbels, NYC. You could obtain one by writrting to Minkus at Gimbels. They were always a hot item. I'm not sure when the last Minkus Catalog was printed, but that is where I would start looking. Someone could make a few bucks getting the numbers and selling a conversion page. And while I don't see the Minkus #'s as frequently, I still find then on lots from Israel, U.S. Material, Vatican, China, and a few other countries. You can put me down for on set of complete sheets for U.S. Postal stationary, etrc, erc.,
Thanks. Winteremere (HAL KLEIN) |

Hi Hal, It is very likely Amos/Scott would have their attorneys send 'cease and desist' letter if anyone tried to publish a cross reference like this. They consider their catalog numbers as proprietary and covered by copyright. Chris and others with knowledge in copyrights will say this is a stretch but the issue at hand is who wants to get into a legal entanglement and rack up legal costs to fight them? Don |
