Can someone point me in the right direction as to what to look for in terms of authenticating this stamp? I consulted Robert Earee's (1874) Album Weeds; Or How to Detect Forged Stamps and wasn't able to reach a conclusion one way or the other. Any input would be appreciated. My suspicion is that it isn't authentic. Either way, it also appears to needs a little bit of a bath after looking at the image!

It is an 1873 stamp that was never issued as far as I can tell. You can find it on the Klaseboer website.

Edifil no.156,mint; they can sell for a few hundred dollars.Stamps that come in different shades of blue, grey blue, black-blue.
below some forgeries:There were postally used forgeries. The first I call the"Dumb"
forgery.

Authentic stamps below:Care must be taken in examining the form of the "o" and the small line below it.

Thanks, Perf12! I can see the issues with the "Dumb" forgery but what details of the "Q" and its tail are you looking for specifically?

I think your stamp is authentic.I don't know the different plate varieties of this stamp.I was making refence to the form of the "o" the overall thickness of the "o" is a bit more in the good forgeries. Also the tail of the "o" is a bit thicker in the good forgeries.I think it's
a difficult stamp too analyse because there are very good forgeries.
***1)Also the inner ear lines in the forgeries are not the same.
***2) The seperation between the 10th to 14th horizontal lines from the bottom up
on the right side of the lower neck, they are wider appart in the real
stamps.

Reprints and forgeries in my collection . A major point in telling the real stamp from reprints and forgeries is the originals are on a shiny paper, having as Earee says are on thick smooth ,white wove paper and have the look as if they were enameled . So a person needs to see that actual stamp and feel it .

RK - Your example appears to be one of the "reprints". The lower right triangular area, that I circled below, contains fewer horizontal lines, with wider spaces, than the opposite side. These widely spaced lines are indicative of the reprints. Compare that triangle to any of the other stamps posted in this thread. Once you've seen this they kind of stand out like a sore thumb.

You can also find the reprints in colors like Black. Some people describe these as "proofs" as well. Although many Spanish specialists just lump them together with the various counterfeits.

If you can read Spanish, this page has some good information about Spanish Carlist stamps in general.
