most of these are post 1940 but I was really hoping someone could help me identify any rare stamps here if there are any and just help my point out the ones that are more "special" I would like to start a decent collection but only if I already have one or two nice ones in here that hold any collector value. I would hate to find out that these are all junk.

These all appear to be very common stamps. You may be starting on the wrong foot if you worry about having "junk". In financial terms, most stamps are worth virtually nothing. The pleasure is in the images on them, and learning about the world from them.

Welcome Absum642,
As GeoffHa mentioned, there are no rarities in the images shown but you have a good start on new hobby if you desire to build upon it. Many stamps were printed in very large numbers so they do not command a high value today. But they are fun, educational, and represent a good family activity. If you have any questions please let us know.

Best to get the unrealistic expectations out of the way quickly than to have some invest a bit more time and money thinking there is a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow when there's not. If that is all they are in it for, then it is best that they get out early.

@blcjr I couldn't agree more, it's all about collecting for the fun of collecting, and the thrill of the hunt for needed stamps, not disregarding the stamps for the history that they are and seeing them as dollar signs, which is extremely unrealistic.

Yeah, why stick with a hobby that doesn't yield a rare stamp out of a group of less than 150 post 40's used stamps?

Far too many have this attitude. If it is not worth a lot of money or won't become such, toss it. I always wonder where folks like this land, hobby wise. My guess is nowhere.

I was nearly lost to the hobby by a parent who opposed my interest in stamps because 'they will never be worth anything.' That was not the only area of my life adversely affected by him but that's not a topic for here..

I view it as part of my our 'duty' to encourage others to discovery our hobby; not every attempt will be successful.

I can't blame or fault people for just thinking about the money. If there was some value it is provable they would just sell them as fast as they can. They are not collectors or even interested in the hobby. I figured if they were even remotely interested they would take the time to do their own research. Which would take all of about 5 mins.

I'm sure a few do take up the hobby, but hard to convert those just looking for a fast dollar. Now find a person asking more than HOW MUCH then you stand a good opportunity.

I think that stamps are like other collectables. Either it grabs you or it doesn't. Stamps happens to be mine. As an example, I inherited a lot of coins, some of which are quite valuable, but I just can't seem to cultivate an interest in them. Coin collectors might think that sad as it might be a good start to a collection. Oh well.

Investment value ----- Minimal

Knowledge gained by learning about the person, place, or event on the stamp ----- Priceless.
