Ok,

So from past experience I have learned to use Zippo (Naphtha) type fluid to peal and clean the stickum off backs of modern adhesive stamps. But I have had a hard time on some U.S. stamps from around 1996. Such as the Christmas issue of that year. Recently I tried using isopropyl alcohol on these and was able to release the stamp from the paper and with a cotton square soaked in the isopropyl pretty much clean all the adhesive off the backs. Anybody else notice the difference in adhesives?

I believe that this subject has been treated over and over on this forum. Several great suggestions have been made, and if you search for "self adhesive" on this forum you will find quite a lot of posts,

I would never use lighter fluid. It leaves a very oily surface and stinks to heck. Also it can give off fumes from the paper that might interfere with the rest of your collection by acting as a wick. Some gentle lifting and a hot hair dryer will remove a self-sticking stamp. Then I just put it on a little bit of wax paper so it wont stick to any other stamps.

Peter,

Try Pure Citrus and scrape the glue off with a credit card.

I have used Bestine, which has worked well, and for the slight stickiness that remains a very light coat of cornstarch on the back. Frankly, it is such a pain to deal with I simply don't collect self-adhesives. The few I do are full panes.

This link will get you to a couple of articles on removing self-adhesives from the APS: https://stamps.org/Tips-and-Links

I'm with Jack. My favorite is to use the pure citrus air freshener spray and scrape the goo off with a credit card. Works wonders.

Two applications will do it. But be careful; it removes cancellations as well.
