I've found a few more cancellations of the Austrian Post Offices in the Turkish Empire on Lombardy-Venetian currency stamps. ALEXANDRIEN - Alexandria (x2) in Egypt, the Lloyd Agency in Constantinople, FILIPOPOLI - Philippopolis (Plovdiv) in Bulgaria and SAMSUN in Turkey: VOLO - Volos in Greece, SALONICCO - Salonica (Thessaloniki) in Greece, SMIRNE - Smyrna (Izmir) in Turkey, TREBISONDA - Trebizond (Trabzon) in Turkey and another Lloyd Agency somewhere(!): |

Hi Rod, In this case it's the Austrian Lloyd company. Here's the first part of the Wikipedia article: Österreichischer Lloyd (Italian: Lloyd Austriaco, English: Austrian Lloyd) was the largest Austro-Hungarian shipping company. It was founded in 1833. It was based at Trieste in the Austrian Littoral, the main port of the Cisleithanian (Austrian) half of the Dual Monarchy.According to the article the original company name was inspired by Lloyd's Register so there's a London connection but not one to the bank. There were Austrian Lloyd shipping offices in many ports and the first Austrian postmarks in the area were on mail that they accepted for their steamers. |

Hello Nigel. Thanks a bunch. I have a Lloyd cancellation on Austria somewhere, cannot locate it at present. Here is information for the record (I found on my database after typing "Lloyd" rather than "Lloyds" |

Here are my last few cancellations of the Austrian Post Offices in the Turkish Empire on Lombardy-Venetian currency stamps, this time on the eagle design. Most of these we've seen before and at least one is a forged postmark! Constintinople: Forged postmark on the scarce 2 soldi, CONSTANTINOPEL I, CONSTANTINOPEL II, and the Lloyd Agency: SMIRNE - Smyrna (Izmir) in Turkey (x2, the second one is suspect), ALEXANDRIEN - Alexandria (x2) in Egypt, JERUSALEM in Egypt: TREBISONDA - Trebizond (Trabzon), SAMSUN and Dardanelles (Canakkale), all in Turkey, SALLONICH - Salonica (Thessaloniki) in Greece: |

Hi, Can anyone please help me identify this postmark? It appears to be something like GÖREAU or GÖRLAU but I can't track it down anywhere. I also don't know what it's doing on this stamp! Is it a forgery/favour cancel using a real canceller? Or is it maybe a misplaced transit or arrival mark? |
