Every time I have a question regarding stamps, I research the information myself, and if I am still bewildered, I seek advice here. When I receive an answer, I wish I could share it with people who will later have the same question that I once had. I decided to experiment on a website, posting a few of my discoveries. I think it would be great to have some way to store questions answered on this site and others all in one place. My vision is that when anyone spends a decent amount of time figuring out the differences between two stamps, or researches a stamp found to be fascinating; whatever the case may be, that they write any sized article and send in to me via my site, and an article with pictures will be created. The main heading have the continents with which they are present, with which include the countries, which include scott #'s and so forth. I feel that this could be a great way to store information that someone spent time digging through various sights to find. It is extremely rough at the moment, but if some individuals would be interested in helping this cause through support, I would be willing to purchase a domain name and turn it into a fully functional sight. Wow, this is quite an undertaking! I applaud any attempt for the better of philately. That said, I think this forum already has tons of posts describing what you are after. One weakness with this site (as I see it) is that the posts/threads are not sorted into different countries or even better sorted on time-periods for different countries. (Well, besides US, Canada and Australia that is). So if you want to make such a project, my advice would be to establish a complete structure by dividing into continents or Imperial empire's etc - then split into single countries and time-periods, so it will be much easier to find the info one is looking for. Quote: I wish I could share it with people who will later have the same question that I once had. I decided to experiment on a website, posting a few of my discoveries. I understand exactly were you are coming from. As recent as one hour ago I came across an issue in this forum that I have been struggling with myself some years ago - and for which I have later found a good 'solution' for in another catalog. So I posted a tiny 'article' in this forum to share that 'new' info and help other collectors out of the same dilemma. If all such 'guidance' on various questions could be collected and organised wisely on a single website, I would be visiting on daily basis (just a thought,...maybe the admins will allow you to 'borrow' some of all the excellent info that have already been shared by forum members on this site - alternatively allow you to establish links to such posts in this site?) |

I like your idea. There is nary a topic or philatelic problem on SCF that I cannot find an answer to using the search function. The problem becomes weeding through the search results which can be very time consuming. Time better spent gazing at stamps and feeding my pet leopard. |

Thank you all for the comments! Blaamand, I took your idea into consideration and I will begin to lay out every country under it's specific continent. South America is finished. I also changed the range from scott numbers to periods of time (1800's, 1900-49, 1950-present). I will continue to work on it and update you as I go! |

I like the idea. True, SCF is pretty much the centre of the philatelic information universe along with SwedishTiger and StampSmarter -"you can get anything you want..." But the possibility - if executed correctly - of sort of a 'value-add'site is intriguing. Not a small project, for sure; good luck!
I've toyed with the idea of at least a blog on Newspaper & Periodical stamps. But if there isn't much interest here (there isn't) where would it come from is the question. |

Quote: I've toyed with the idea of at least a blog on Newspaper & Periodical stamps. But if there isn't much interest here (there isn't) where would it come from is the question. I think you're looking at it kind of backwards. If you truly have the interest, and it sounds like you do, go for it. For a blog, there are enough free blogger sites around. You should be able to get stats on hits that would tell you after a while if there's enough interest in your view for you to justify keeping it up. And you should be willing to keep up a blog with some sort of regularity rather than letting it sit for months or years and suddenly starting again. If you want to write articles with illustrations/photos, you might make a pitch to Don of Stamp Smarter (51studebaker here) who has been very supportive of both major and niche projects. And while SCF and those other guys are the big time stamp forums, there's still a lot of people out there that are online but don't do forums. You might take it as your mission to be what the computer industry calls evangelism, to expose more people to Newspapers/Periodicals and generate more interest. I feel we just don't see much material except the fakes of this area to have much interest or experience for discussion. Cook, this sounds like quite a worthy project. The same suggestions made to Molokai are also made to you. |

We have seen quite a few nice website disappear when the well intentioned creator had some life event (lost interest, health, etc). It is great to have such interest but the challenge is to find a way that it continues on. Don has saved some of these through stampsmarter.

Hi Cook,
I've also toyed with the idea of creating several websites to help others and have the domain names and web hosting to make it happen, but it's a huge undertaking to keep sites like that current as well as up and running. I may do it sometime in the future, but just don't have a lot of time now to make them happen. I'm a professional programmer and web developer, so if you have any design or technical questions I'll help if I can. Thanks! |
