This was in a book I bought at auction. Labeled j8. It's there any possible way? There's a book full of Bob stamps. Especially postage due. But a j8??

Most likely J1, J8 is the 1879 special printing. These stamps (all of the Special Printings) were only available through the Office of the 3rd Assistant Postmaster General in Washington, DC. Those sold through the mail were required to enclose amount of purchase, return postage, and the 10˘ registry fee.
