Sent by me to me - lovely s.s. cover - with additional req'd postage on back. Observed to me by Mongolia collector that Mongolian Postal Service does not do the hobby a service by maintaining sale of very old issues at face. Back issue 1959, purchased at post office that day. Sadly, rarities for this country are rare indeed. But they do exist.

I was working in Ulaanbaatar a couple of years ago, right opposite the post office, and it was amazing the number of older stamps you could still buy over the counter. I sent some nice covers to friends, hope they kept them. Sadly, the really good stamps from early 1950s are all out of stock!

This happens in places like Afghanistan as well. Places where supplies and service is iffy at best commonly have older issues for long, long periods. There's probably African countries with remote post offices with stocks of older issues as well.

"........right opposite the post office." That would be - methinks - the cultural centre with the big columns?
