Kustenland, or the Austrian Littoral was established as a crown land of the Austrian Empire in 1849. It consisted of three regions: the Istria peninsula, Gorizia and Gradisca, and the Imperial Free City of Trieste. Throughout history, the region has been frequently contested, with parts of it controlled at various times by the Republic of Venice, Austria-Hungary, Italy, and Yugoslavia among others. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Austrian_Littoral Abbazia - Opatija now in Croatia Buje - still Buje, now in Croatia Cabo D'Jstria - Koper, now in Slovenia Castua - Kastav, now in Croatia

Four really nice postmarks BeeSee. Thanks for sharing them and I do like the map as well. I've vaguely heard of Koper/Capodistria but the other three are new names to me. That is a fantastic strike of CASTUA. |

That is all I have for now, except for some more Trieste, if I can find them.
Anyone feel free to add anything related to Kustenland! |

Wow, those postmarks are all very attractive. And earlier we were entertained by an impressive exhibition of postmarks from offices in the Levant - where have you got them all from? |

Jon, most of my Austria material came from ebay over the past ten years or so. It is only the past couple of years I have seriously sorted - especially since you sent me the Excel sheet of Austrian towns . Most of the Kustenland cancels were a recent lucky find on ebay . |

It sounds like a similar story for me. My Austrian Levant postmarks were the result of buying small mixed lots on ebay over the years when looking for Crete material. I had sorted the stamps that were neither from Crete nor used in Crete in catalogue order in Prinz sheets but until last week I had left the postmarks as something to look at in the future. |

Excellent stuff you have, both of you, very inspirational. You have done some good pickups on ebay. I need to do some shopping as well ... Btw, I guess most have already figured it out, just wanted to mention it: 'Kustenland' would translate to something like 'the land by the coast' - or simply 'coastland'. Quite an ironic choice of name, bearing in mind the Austrians lost their connection to the sea/coast after WWI... |
