In this case the grill is quite distinct. If the shape of the boxes in late state grills is the same then I think the question will be is there any evidence of any pressed-out grill points. I looked on ebay for any certified I grills. Unfortunately most don't show the backs (doh!). I did see a few however. Early state grills do look different. There is one out there that was certified by former SCF member Bill Weiss that looks very much like mine. Well, since there are only something like 3 known examples of 139A unused I'm absolutely not going to get excited until I see their result. Also, since the PF are in the process of moving to a new location I probably won't bring this to them until December. I'll certainly let the forum know what the result is when it comes.

Just found this really excellent post by essayk:

It will take a bit time for me to read, understand and transfer everything to my grills of my stamps...but I guess this is very important knowledge there.

Wow, that is a great post. I'm reaching no conclusions on my own at this point, but I am encouraged but what I see there.

Yes, after reading it and comparing with Burns' results I can't get any conclusions either. In Burns' special feature for the Scott specialized 2013 (initial report 2006 in the book "Opinions VII" by the PF) he shows grill examples and explains the grill pyramids a little bit different than in the link above. Also, the early state I grill of essayk has indeed reverse embossing in the photo, and his late state I grill appears really very strong, which perhaps is not typical. At Burns the late states of H grill and I grill are more similar to each other. As another example, cfrphoto mentioned in the link I gave in my thread for example that it's typical for an early I grill to be incomplete and show a single column only. The thing about vertical or horizontal paper mesh does not help for me to get things clearer. As we see in your and my thread it's a difficult topic with many questions but less answers.

So is this topic still "under construction" even beneath experts and has there been any publication since 2013 about it?

(Don't know why the PF - or also Siegel - does not show the reverse of the stamp in its database. Best is learning from examples.)

After some personal issues that took me offline for a couple months I finally got this stamp to the PF. Came back as a fake grill. :( Also "faintly cancelled". lol
