Hi all,

I need to double check myself on this stamp and would like to run it by everyone in the forum here. Here it is:

Here is the Scott listing I am looking at:

The stamp is not gummed and is not used. The centering could be better, looks Fine to me. The paper is very thin.

It looks like it might be worth more than the rest of my 20 cent stamps if this identification is accurate.

Then I look on ebay and find this in completed listings, I must have it wrong, but not sure what I am doing wrong.

Please advise, and thank you all for your help. Julie

the denomination appears to be 10, not 25. hard to tell from scan, but does it appear to you to possibly be red lilac

/edit/ bear with me, my neuropathy is making my typing skills deteriorate, rapidly. /edit/

kuhli, thank you for the help - I have tried with a magnifying glass to read the denomination and am not able to using the chart you posted. This is closer:

The number looks much more like 25 using the Ottoman numerals, not like 10 at all.

As for the color, I don't see any lilac, but must look at it under daylight tomorrow to be sure.

Thank you for pointing me in the right direction and for your help, Julie

#46 & #47 are extremely rare stamps. And the catalog values seem to reflect this!

In 2006 Scott, 46 & 47 are listed at $250 each.

Don't know what year the catalog picture above is from, but shows them up to $950 each.

In 2017 Scott, each is listed at $1700.

For those counting - that's a 580% increase in the last 11 years...

Here is the number enlarged - this stamp was issued by the Ottoman empire and the numerals that were used are described in the link I posted above - is your 25 an Ottoman Empire 25 or a more modern one? Thank you redwoodrandy for your help, this stamp does not look lilac to me - I have looked at it under the light with the loupe and it is pink from what I can tell - it is darkish in the room I am in, the light is not bright so do want to see it tomorrow morning in the daylight. Thank you so much mdroth, I posted and then saw your reply, I knew there had to be a catch - I knew this was not for real which is why I wanted to check here - I am mighty glad I did. I swear I don't see any lilac in this stamp - but I believe you that it is number 42 not the one I was thinking it was, thank you, Julie

You're looking at the overprint & the color. There's no reason to do either...

The stamp's denomination is in arabic - look at the arabic '10' as in the chart posted above by kuhli.

The stamp's denomination is printed on the stamp 4 times - in all 4 corners - inside of circles...and it is an arabic '10'

I was looking at the bottom of the over print for the denomination, what is the point of the the overprint if it doesn't change something like the denomination of the stamp - maybe only to identify the issuing authority? Anyway, I see the arabic 10 now that I am looking at the corners of the stamp clearly. Thank you so much mdroth, this has been quite a good lesson for me

And thank you also rod, the one on hipstamp is also a ten, now that I know where to look I should be able to recognize a rare one if I run across it (fat chance!)

Here is yet another mistakenly identified Scott 42, this seller duped the buyer into paying 36 dollars for this stamp. Sad.

Well you're absolutely correct - that auction is a common Scott #65 that the seller incorrectly listed as a #47 - and got some sucker to cough up $36. Cat value for that stamp mint is $3 - and you can prob buy hundreds of them for $.25 if you were so inclined...

That seller should know better - but doesn't seem to care. But the buyers should know better too...

Your question/comment about the overprint is a very good one.

All of those stamps - Scott design type A5 - known as the 'Duloz' issues - were overprinted. The stamp without any overprint was never issued - and only exists as essays/proofs, which are extremely rare.

Yes - most overprints - generally - change something from the original stamp. (Of the 6 different types of overprints on these stamps, only one type actually did that - overprint type 5, which includes Scott #s 48-52.

The overprint says 'Postage of the Ottoman Empire" and the lower part of the overprint does, in fact, spell out the denomination of the stamp, in Arabic characters. As per the Duloz specialized catalog:

"The overprint was used to point out the nominal value of the stamp by transcript {words} alongside the numeral of the design and together with the words Postage of the Ottoman Empire."

Actually, there are two different underlying designs of these stamps - one for all of the other values, and a separate design for the 5k & 25k values. (These are hard to see / distinguish because of the overprints - but once you know what to look for, it is another clear distinction between the stamps.

But the seven different values for these stamps are very clear & distinct, as are the 6 different types of overprints. Once familiar with them, there is little chance of confusing them. I do not consider these stamps - and especially telling #46 / #47 from the common #42-45 - to be a widespread source of confusion - as is the case with many other Ottoman stamps!
