kcarmat,

Regarding the stamp you pictured in your 11/24/2017 post, are the blind perfs an exact match to 12-gauge perfs or do they gauge slightly wider, say 11 1/2 to 11 3/4?

I just checked it. They are not a perfect 12. They are slightly wider as you suggest.

Thank you for taking the time to check that. I can't imagine they are anything other than 12-gauge bureau perforations, so something must be happening in the perforator that causes the sheet of stamps to slip ever so slightly when not punching through.

According to the 2013 Schermack Control Perfin census there was 1 diamond pattern reported on a #383 and 15 reported on #343. I did not see that watermark with my own eyes and if I were a betting man, I'd guess it was miss read.

The last known dated cover on a Schermack with diamond control pin is 9/29/1910. The earliest known #383 is listed as Jan 28, 1911, so the odds are small but not impossible.

If your stamp is indeed a #383 it would have some value. Unfortunately there are not many of us left that collect these.

Depending where it is located, on the stamp, the Double line watermark U can sometimes be mistaken for a Single line watermark U.

Give me a S or P and it's a slam dunk.
