perf12, Interesting! I found a stamp with a similar cancel and was wondering what it was or referenced. Unfortunately the stamp itself is in rough shape, but the cancel is interesting. |

Interesting, thank you perf12. Yes, I realize that the stamp is faulty. It amazes me sometimes why people would just cut a stamp without regard. |

Very nice! The placement of stamps is interesting. Is that a standard placement for the time? |

Perf12, apologies for late reply, I've been unstampy for some days... Gorgeous Monaco cancellation, congratulations. Quote: Blaamand: can you post the link about the French PO's and GC 7571 ? The PC / GC overview is on the Marcophillie website you are well familiar with, but I don't get a bookmark or link working to the particular page. ( http://marcophilie.org/x/x-los-i.html) for some reason beyond my data-knowledge. Annoying. Anyway, I use this route to find the PC/GC overview. From the main menu, follow : 'Aide a l'identification par la forme', then select 'Losange' in the left menu, finally select '1852 - Liste des bureaux' in left menu. I am not familiar with any GC number above the last number on this list, number 6449. However I saw someone mentioning a higher number on this site and are curious if anyone has more information?? |

I have at least two other lists of GC cancels, one published, one saved from the Interwebz, both of which top out at 6449. |

Thanks Cjd, all references seems to be aligned then.
On a slightly different note, does anybody know a resource for scarcity / 'points' for the various post offices? I believe the Monaco-forerunners are listed in Yvert, but it would be interesting to see scarcity for all the other offices as well. |

In the link there is the cotation when you enter the number or town name I don't know on what it is based on.In the explanation ( The blue i)it says it's based on the average market prices. One would need to have the Pothion catalog where every number is priced. http://pcgc.e-timbres.net/ |

The recent reference to a GC of 7571 for Monte Carlo was at this link in the Austria Offices Abroad thread a week or so ago: http://stamps.endfield.org.uk/FRPOS.HTMHowever, this seemingly cannot refer to a French GC cancel, as the open and close dates for the Monte Carlo post office referenced at that site are December 1884 to June 1885, while the highest GC numbers in the French system were issued for post offices opening up until 1876. So something else seems to be going on there. Nevertheless, Klaseboer references this number. Philatelic Side Lines, a 1907 pamphlet from the Springfield (Mass.) Stamp Club lists this number for Monte Carlo in a list of otherwise-typical GC numbers for "Foreign Offices of the French Post Office" (including Monaco as 2387). The link above contains pretty specific information about the opening and closing of the post office, so that might help someone find more. I'm sure that someone with better Google Fu than I have, and perhaps more command of French than my menu French, can find more. As always, corrections are welcomed. |
