Greioslumerki overprint on Iceland Scott #174 and #175.

I have been unsuccessful locating these stamps in catalogues.

Any help appreciated.

Tim, they are payment tax stamps (effectively a receipt) for money orders, invoices, etc. used 1935 prior to the issue of dedicated revenue stamps. They aren't numbered in Facit but sit just before G1 and G2, after the official stamps.

Definitely back of the book, but definitely very desirable!

Apparently the overprint has turned them into revenue stamps (try greidslu-merki)

Here's a quote from a relevant article:

Quote:
To conclude, I should add that the Greišslumerki stamps are Revenue stamps, and were created for the payment of a flat fee on receipts of payment for amounts greater than 20 aurar, starting in 1935 and ending in 1941. This included Money Orders. Remainders of 65 aurar and 75 aurar Gullfoss stamps of 1932 were overprinted for this use, until specific Greišslumerki stamps were definitively issued in 1936. They are Cinderellas, therefore, but might be of interest to readers.

That would be a totally wrong statement. Whomever wrote this did not know a thing about stamps in my opinion. A stamp that is legally overprinted is not a cinderella

Peter, I agree with you totally. There are many who class revenues (wrongly) as cinderella stamps, either through laziness or ignorance, maybe both.

These revenues are Facit listed and illustrated.

There are a lot of different issues listed under Cinderella Stamps ,it is used as a catch all phrase to handle anything not normally listed in the postage stamp catalogs . Both of you are correct in that it is government issued and not a Cinderella .
