Thanks stampraider, and welcome! Just in case your link gets erased (see the rules) it is from a blog called Stamp Raider so people can find it by Googling. When looking through Canada Post's list I had though many times that I wished they would (them, someone, anyone) make a list by subject or theme. |

The previously mantioned Halifax Main Sortation Plant cancel on some USA balloon and other stamps, a 2013 USA to Canada cover, missed by the USPS cancellers. |

A 36mm diameter large circular cancel from COBBLE HILL, BC V0R 1L0 2013 -04- 24 Looks like the modern circular POCON cancels but without the 6-digit number. |

Just in . . . (received March 11, 2014) On an envelope with a modern Canada POCON postmark, dated Mar 10, 2014, from Dartmouth, NS, is a Barrel-type cancel, (barrel cancels originally used circa 1950's) non-dated, used for obliteration and cancelling purposes, from the sortation plant on Almon Street in Halifax (B3K 1T0). Dartmouth and Halifax are twin cities across the Halifax Harbour from each other, now all part of Halifax Regional Municipality HRM, so all mail goes through the main sortation plant in Halifax. |

Puzzler, great looking Barrel-type cancels from Dartmouth.
But I have to say when I see forty, fifty, even seventy year old stamps on a current cover I cringe.
When I get something similar to that I just crumple it up and in the fireplace it goes.
I just have no use for it. |

Barrel cancels are from Halifax sorting plant. The cover is from Dartmouth and comes over to Halifax plant to be sorted and sent on it's way. I like to see modern stamps myself, but, considering the costs of running a stamp club, which the cover was from, the Nova Scotia Stamp Club, I think they made a wise decision for costs saving alone (possibly). It is nice to get older stamps that I haven't seen for a while, as they are allowed to be used as well as any mint, post office fresh postage from 1859 on in Canada. It;s a new 2014 cancel too and the Post Office and it;s employees are looking after the mails very well here. I like cancels too. |

Just re read this thread and took a look at the CP listing of all availiable pictorials. Now I have a probably 250+/- from the previous owner but I never really sorted them all (yet). My curiosity was just how much would it take to get them all as of X date. Counting each province and territory shows a total of 820 availiable. Lets say that is complete and accurate -- Assuming new postal rates of $0.85 and the fact you need 2 per request (one too get there and one back you would spend $1.70 per request X 820 request for a tidy sum of $1394 and thats not including actual envelopes . As fun as the venture would be and the fact all would be adressed to the collector would be great plus you could choose which stamps to use . My fear would be they would get re canceled on return journey. The answer to that is triplicate - 1 envelope containg 2 additionals to postmaster. 1 canceled nice and neat and inserted into 3rd for return journey. Thus giving you duplicates but one technically mint unaltered cancel . Only adds an additional $697 to the total now at $2091 plus your choice of stationary/envelopes. Sounds crazy but with the proposed changes to CP you have to wonder if its a serious look at Canadian postal history not to far down the road. Views and opinions welcome. |

I just saw on page 4 that someone had posted a pic of the Vulcan cancel.... I live in Vulcan. I'm pretty sure I have this cancel but if anyone is interested in it I can go find out if they still have it and send it to anyone. |

Alberta Stamper, I will take a Vulcan cancel please. Email me through the system to get my address. Doug. I remember the Corner Gas cancel, saw it in some kiloware on ebay years ago but it went up too high at the time for me. Can you post a scan of it or photo? Is it a POCON (6-numeral) also or a Pictorial / Philatelic cancel? |
