I'm a newbie here and spending far too much time going through old threads just for the halibut. There are many great threads and this is one, in my opinion, that deserves to be brought to the top again. Fantastic information from good sources.

Candle lake, Saskatchewan pictorial postmark:

I like this one.It seems peaceful.
Reading Wikipedia
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Candle...katchewan%29
one finds that it is a resort fishing area.

The Legend is from (probably?) Northern Lights on the lake's Northern end flickering like candles. Named after an old First Nations Cree legend.

More interesting info on the lake and legend:

Wow! You just don't realize how many of them there are until you see a bunch all together like that.

Question, this one sticks out to me:

Possible for a closer photo / scan please?
Bottom row, second on from left.

Ok I'll have to dig out the album as I couldn't get the scan to clean up enough . I'll pick a few intereting ones and do nicer scans. Just amazes me the effort put into these. There are a few that he resent to different locations and have multiple cancels on the cover .

Thanks nitrolures. Great cancels.

I like the Montpellier one with the bird singing.

Some of the pictorial cancels have been retired according to the Canada Post website.

Halifax, NS circular date Stamp cancel shown previously in this thread is still in use (or a replacement of it).

To me this seems like the worker is left handed as the circle of the cancel is not as heavily struck on the right hand side.

Or it could mean they were right-handed and struck all stamps while the piece of mail was upside down.

Or that they were left or right handed and the cancelling rubber stamp is wearing out.

How about an Ogopogo cancel. Only a representation and not a photo of the old lake monster

Love that Ogopogo monster in the lake, reminiscent of Nessie, the Loch Ness monster.

A POCON cancel but it's circular, yay!
Port Colborne, Ontario

I like those Peel'n Stic large-sized flag stamps from years ago too, nice rounded corners. Hey, lets make all our flag definitives this large! (Or is it just the right size?) (Hint to Canada Post.) Try it, you'll like it!

Can the pictoral cancels be used on a stamped postcard, or does it absolutely have to be a stamped envelope?

I would think you could put them on anything you wanted really. Postally related that is. A postcard, an envelope, a pieve of paper.

I like the postcard idea (even prepaid) because it gives you a nice collectible and an easy way to collect the cancels too in an easy size.

Thanks for your reply, Puzzler. I think I'll give the postcard a try. I was vaguely aware that pictorial cancels existed, but I never paid any attention to them until I found this thread. Since I don't have any experience creating covers, I thought postcards might be an interesting way to collect these cancels.

I was curious if Vulcan, AB offered a unique design, and it would be both cute and geeky to have an image of its futuristic-looking Tourism and (Star) Trek Station as a cancel on a Spock postcard. (Leonard Nimoy visited the town last year, in case some of you didn't know.)

This alien space ship cancel from Moonbeam, ON caused my inner geek girl to squeal with delight! :
