Unless it is intentionally being held private for some reason(s), the Stamp Smarter plating projects are a good way to make plating examples freely available to the entire hobby with no commercialization. I think the plating of the US stamps is now beyond monetization and we should strive to share with all. I invested a lot of time building these databases and they are configured to serve the hobby for decades to come. Many other have also already contributed their time to them.
If anyone would like to assist but do not want to spend time adding to the projects, you can simply send me a file sharing link and we will get them uploaded.

Hi Rick,
Thank you for your tireless efforts. I did not want to hijack this thread but posted some of my thoughts on 'information sharing' in our hobby in this new thread https://goscf.com/t/78972

Hi Rick,
I have Dick's 1c Plate 2 reconstruction (minus 4 positions).

His other platings - which consisted of almost all 1c and 3c plates (and lots of revenue material) have been dispersed mostly to collectors who specialize in those plates or areas. They went to good homes.

I could only hope that the 1c plate one late that I am working on goes to a good home and stays intact instead of a dealer splitting it up when I pass on. But that is not likely. My brother would not have a clue about what to do with them.

It is a shame that all of Dick's plating work has been lost to the plating community. Split up so that only a few collectors see a small part of his work. It is a shame that his images were not documented on the web for all to see and benefit everyone.

Actually his work has been mostly well preserved, including all of his images.

He worked in collaboration with others and he handed off almost everything prior to his passing, I believe.

I bought another #7 with a red Mobile, AL cancel and tried to plate it. The only thing that I could see to work with was the guide dot on the stamp above. I see just enough of the guide dot and the bottom of the stamp to match it with 64L2, and that makes me pretty confident that I have my example is position 74L2. The best comparison is in the block of 24 from Siegel sale 994, lot 910, which includes both stamps such that I could carefully compare the dot position.

Widglo,

This my copy of 74L2:

The dot in the O of ONE shown in Neinken is really a
short faint dash. There is also a vertical scratch to the right of Franklin's nose which shows on my stamp but not so well on the scan.

The dot above seems well to the left on my stamp.

So it does not look like your stamp is 74L2.

If you send me a 1200 dpi scan,*** Private information removed by Staff. Please do not post your address/email/phone number etc. ***, I will try to plate it.

Njs900 - Thanks for sharing your example of 74L2, and I'll email you a scan of my stamp. I'm sure that you are right - mine can't be 74L2. Your example matches exactly the 74L2 in the block of 24 with the vertical scratch on the right side very clear in both your examples. There isn't a trace of it in mine. In my stamp, the position of the guide dot relative to the ornaments below is also further to the right than in yours.

I don't know why that I was so quick to eliminate the right pane when I was studying the plate 2 guide dots. On first examination, they all seemed just too far out of position to be a match. After a closer look, I now think that 35R2 is the correct position. In addition, there is a burr on the tip of the right scroll of 25R2 that matches my example. Lastly, Neinken points to a faint vertical line in the L-M ornament that I also found in my example.

Njs900 - Thanks for confirming. We have each other's email address now if you want to exchange scans on any other stamp. I sent you a mail with the forum's message service, but I don't know if you got it. If you would send me a scan of your strip of 5 including the 49L2, I'd much appreciate it.

I bought another #20 that I felt sure was relief "A", Plate 2, but I wanted to plate it. I knew "A" relief examples could be hard sometimes, but is this case I got lucky. There is a curl in Franklin's hair that I thought must be distinctive for the position, so I started looking for a match there. Although none of the Neinken maps showed a similar curl, the 52R2 example on Doposto's site was a perfect match. Marks in the top label that match both the Neinken map and Doporto's example confirmed the position.
