One Very Confusing Certificate Description

yes, but you are more competent than most collectors / dealers. I bought an auction lot from Nutmeg years ago that was listed in the catalog as a cover with a Scott #67a (olive yellow) with PFC. The cert actually said "submitted as 67a" and the opinion was "genuine #67" on cover.

Obviously one can take 30 or 40 or 50 year old certs and nitpick about them. No, they were not all written the same way. The people were not the same, and their interests were not necessarily the same. Everyone knows that any cert much more then 10-15 years old is going to sound very different from the more recent certs. Have an old cert that is written poorly? Get a new cert. Or accept that no 70 year old organization will be identical for it's entire existence.
