Hello again forum: I was wondering if anyone here could inform me as to wether the cancel on this 049 is STC-19 Levering, Ohio? It is the closest I could fine.

Is circle a double circle with a smear of ink or is it a circle that wasn't inked enough and just looks like a double circle? Any help sure would be appreciated. I know it is not a premium cancel and really just curious where it is from. It would be nice if the duplex cancel was there to help. The stamp has seen its better days I agree but it is just a filler.

Thanks again for the help

Circled stars were popular, there are lots of variations.

Looks like a double circle to me. The STC-19 drawing looks to have the star points closer to the circle than yours. Still, the drawings in book references can be excellent to rather flawed, so it's sometimes hard to make matches. The newest additions to the online database are actual scans for (I think) better comparison.

Some of the fancy designs were from the same commercial supplier so they would be fairly hard to tell apart.

Each strike of the canceling device could result in a different cancel, depending how clean the device was, upon how hard the cover was struck, and what was in the envelope. Is your cancel a double ring or did it bounce?
Below is a good example of how a cancel changes; this one wasn't cleaned often, the PM let ink build up inside the star until a year later the open star is now solid.

This is the earliest known use of HUM-4350 ( The William's catalog #) on cover followed by the tracing of the same postmark in the John WIlliams book, California Town Postmarks 1850 - 1935

Littleriverphil and hy-brasil thank you both. I'll look at stampsmarter and the book more.
