All I knew back then was the omitted surcharge on this issue. So I didn't know what else to ask.

Really awesome thread. Fabulous find (!) & great info.

Scott 2012 specialized has U586a at $375 mint and $1000 used - with the used value being in italics - meaning it does not get sold often & is unique!

". . . So I didn't know what else to ask."

Understandable.

When submitting an envelope for expertising, its best to steer the result towards the UPSS catalog, even if you don't own one.

With a UPSS # you can always get to the Scott #. The reverse is not true.

Somewhere in the cert request, ask for the full UPSS # of the envelope submitted. The "full" UPSS number will have the watermark as part of it.

As a US postal stationery examiner for APEX, I typically include the UPSS number on the worksheet and it usually gets on to the certificate. However, I did not joint the committee until December 2002. To qualify for listing in the UPSS catalog your item must be 1) physically examined by two members of the catalog editorial committee or 2) have a certificate from APEX. Thomas and I are both members of the editorial committee.

So how would you like me to proceed? I haven't belonged to APEx for several years due to time spent raising children. Not sure if I will rejoin soon.

Your choice, Michael. A new APEX cert would not hurt resale value. Or, choose to send the item to a member of the UPSS editorial committee. Contact email for the chief editor is available on UPSS.org
