Counterfeit Stamps In My Collection

I acquired 10 stamps in a trade that purport to be Scott 357-366. They have the bluish gray background. I was excited at the find. I had two experts evaluate the issue. They agreed that the issue was counterfeit. Does anyone know how I might further confirm their evaluation? Secondarily, I was told that there are collectors that specialize in counterfeits. Does anyone know if this is true?

You could send them off to the Philatelic Foundation if you are not satisfied with the experts opinions. It will cost you.

They are not forgeries, they were misidentified or misrepresented. No?

All collectors end up with fakes and forgeries while collecting. Yes, there are collectors of counterfeits. Some are valuable. Some are crude.

I am not an advocate of buying every valuable stamp with a reliable cert, but when it comes to something like bluish paper issues, I would say a cert is imperative. There are many misidentified rare stamp varieties, some intentionally and others because of lack of knowledge. But, perhaps no single U.S.issue is misidentified more often than these experimental paper stamps. Remember, these stamps (with the exception of 1 & 2 cent issues) are RARE. Consequently, finding them is tough. The chance of just "happerstancing" onto a complete set is slim. I see non-certed bluish papers on ebay all of the time, generally trading at a fraction of their catalog value. Almost without exception, they are NEVER bluish paper. We all like a bargain, but we need to be realistic with our expectations, as well. If a deal looks to good to be true, it usually is. My rule is when buying a stamp that derives ALL of its value from proper attribution, I would never buy it from an unknown source without a reliable certificate. The Washington-Franklins are full of rare issues, and this series is a perfect example of what I'm referring to.
